Saturday Book Corner

Blood Warrior

by H.D. Gordon

Book Blurb:
When her home is attacked by murderous vampires, 17-year-old Alexa is forced to leave her mother for dead in order to save her sister. She soon learns that she is the last known member of an elite race of supernatural Warriors, and is thrust into a world full of vampires and werewolves who all seem to regard her as some sort of savior. Meanwhile, Alexa battles a monster within herself that seeks to gain control; a monster that seeks blood.

The hidden city she finds herself in appears perfect, but Alexa's instincts tell her that all is not right within its walls. When she is asked to attend a school of fighters, whose exams consist of gladiator-style competitions, she must decide who she can trust among the smiling faces. And, when she meets Kayden, a vampire she feels undeniably drawn to, she must decide if she can trust herself.

Rating:

Review:
I discovered the book through Dark Muse: An Indie Paranormal Sampler  and after reading the first few chapter of the story  I decided, that I would like to read the rest of the book.

This is Gordon's debut novel. She is a new Indie Author from the US. Find out more about her and her books on her webstite.

The story is about Alexa, a girl who is aware of her strange up bringing. but suddenly one night she and her family get attacked by vicious monsters, which makes her find out who she and her sister really are.
with her friend jack the flee and discover a heaven for people like them called two rivers. but soon Alexa feels that something is off with the too perfect place.

I really enjoyed Gordon's storytelling. Though I have to admit about a quarter in I thought, oh its that typical paranormal stuff... and then the story started taking different twists and turns and left me gasping at the end!

I liked most of the characters, though Alexa, the narrator was often a tumble of emotions, and her feelings and behaviors towards jack and Kayden left me a bit exasperated. she could spend the night at Kayden and thought that was totally normal, despite the fact that she is seeing jack?
I personally would like her to get Kayden to open up. they seem to belong together. and that's just one unresolved situation i am fretting about after reading the book

I liked Kayden. He is somewhat up tight but he genuinely wants to do whats right, he is loyal and protective. but sadly very tight lipped.
Jack is the sweet darling, best friend, always there as well. but something about him just makes me not trust him. Like how he knows where Alexa was and that she visited the Queen. He is a great contrast to Kayden and somehow sets off the whole triangle in a more interesting light. Not that I am a lover of love triangles. But yes there is one and a rather frustrating one at that.
And i am not sure what Tommy was all about...

Nelly, is a so-called Searcher with her own secret. She is Alexa's greatest support and the sweetness and softness in Alexa's life. The trust and the relationship between the sisters is beautiful.

There were many other characters but I found it scatter the aim a bit. so many different beings so many characters. I do hope that the next book will bring everything together and to the point.
which is the main reason i gave it 3.5 rather than 4 stars.
All in all I enjoyed the book. and am looking forward to more prose from Gordon.

Books

I am looking forward to the release of....

Summary:
Red pain, Red desire, Red need, Red hunger…

I have been plagued by the same dream for months now. A nightmare filled with red, dripping with death, where I am the hunter. There is no escape, no end in sight…. The nightmare has become a reality and I am forced with a choice – I can become one with the darkness that lives within that is clamoring, clawing to escape, or I can bury the demon, and the nightmares, once and for all.

It may seem like an easy choice, but not when I also have to choose between the father who has raised me or a mother whom I have thought was dead. Not when the choice is my humanity or Immortality….

Aided by a dark mysterious stranger, a hidden world is opened up to Adelin - a world full of bloodlust and death - the Black world of Immortals. Torn between the two, she faces the hardest decision she's ever had to make. Will she choose the safe, familiar life she has always known? Or will she let the darkness consume her?

This is Gilbert's Debut Novel. Jessa lives in southeastern Iowa and has aspired to write a novel since the age of nine. Now she is a mother of 3 and I think she is incredibly talented and am looking forward to not only reading this novel but also many more!
The book will be released in August on Amazon in Kindle Format, but she has published teasers and the entire first chapter on her blog.
